Protest: Youths demand justice for Mohbad

Thousands of youths protested peacefully in the capital of Ogun State, Abeokuta, to demand justice for the killing of a prominent Nigerian artist, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

This occurred as Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday ordered the state police command to work with the Department of State Services (DSS) to look into the circumstances surrounding the music star’s passing, urging that the matter not be ignored and that justice be done.

The Nigeria Police Force was likewise demanded by Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji to look into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s passing.

As a result, the police established a 19-man commission on Monday to solve the musician’s death mysteries. However, the governor expanded the scope of the probe by inviting the DSS to help in the effort to secure justice for the young person, his family, and throngs of supporters, according to a statement by the Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso.

Sanwo-Olu took note of the occurrences that followed the passing of the music icon and asked everyone who might be in possession of crucial information that could help the inquiry process to provide it to the investigation team.

He said: “We feel the pains of losing such a talented and promising young man, who made a name for himself in a highly competitive industry. May the Almighty grant his soul rest and comfort his bereaved family and fans.

“The government appeals to all friends and fans of the deceased to stay calm and refrain from making inflammatory utterances and reaching prejudicial conclusions on this matter.

“Staying calm and following the process keenly will be our most solemn tribute to the memory of the departed talent.

“Besides, the grieving family should be allowed to mourn their loss in peace. It is, indeed, a difficult time for us all – the government, the family and Mohbad’s fans.

“Any action that can aggravate the grief should be avoided. The Police and the DSS have been admonished to brief the public on their efforts periodically.” In addition, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the deputy governor of Lagos State, has pledged that the state will help the family care for the late singer’s child. He said this while paying the mother of the deceased musician a condolence visit. Hamzat gave Mohbad’s family his assurance that justice would be served in this case.

The songs of Azeez Fashola, also known by his stage name Naira Marley, have been outlawed by Splash FM 105.5 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Aderonke Adesola, a broadcaster at the station, stated via an X tweet that the management had permanently outlawed the songs of the CEO of Marlian Records.

She claims that the station’s management has placed Naira Marley’s music on the radio frequency marked “Not to Be Broadcast.”

“In view of the sensitive nature around the death of Mohbad and the criminal procedure, which the police have commenced, I will urge us all to exercise discretion.

“To this effect, Naira Marley’s songs now have Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB) on our station till further notice. This is with immediate effect. Thank you,” the tweet says.

It has been suggested that Naira Marley, who called off his partnership with MohBad in 2022, was responsible for the passing of his former signee. He has, however, refuted the charge.
A few young people also took to the streets yesterday in the Panseke neighborhood of Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, to seek justice for the death of the well-known artist, who passed away last Tuesday.

The youths gathered in large groups at the skating rink in Abeokuta, wearing black and holding signs that read, among other things, #JusticeForMohbad, #Who off Light among others.

Youths in Akure, Ondo State, flooded major roadways yesterday to protest the passing of the renowned Nigerian singer.
The purpose of the demonstration, which included slogans and demands for justice, was to raise awareness of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death and to demand justice.

The demonstration was organized by concerned youths and fans of the late artist, who were all dressed in black. They began at the well-known NEPA roundabout and marched through the Oba Adesida road-Cathedral intersection before continuing to the Arakale route.

Biodun Oyebanji, the governor of Ekiti State, has demanded justice for the late musician. The governor claimed that only a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding his death and the other discoveries that surfaced afterward could bring about justice.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, Oyebanji asked the police to swiftly solve the mystery surrounding Mohbad’s death.

He said young people were about to stage a procession in the state capital of Ado-Ekiti to honor the late Singer and demand justice for him.

Oyebanji described Mohbad as a gifted singer who appeared to be from Ekiti State and, at the age of 27, had already established himself in the entertainment industry with a number of hit songs to his name. He added that the singer’s passing at the height of his career and the circumstances surrounding it are extremely unfortunate.

Femi Falana (SAN), a human rights attorney, has also called for an inquest into the musician’s passing. Falana made the demand in response to the musician’s contentious passing on September 12 and subsequent burial the following day. In a letter addressed to the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State in Ikeja, the attorney requested a coroner inquiry.
